Welcome to the Association of Wrens.  Formed in 1920 to maintain the esprit de corps of the Wrens who served during WW1, the Association is still thriving today.  Membership is open to retired members of the WRNS, WRNR, QARNNS, VAD and to women who have or are serving in the Royal Navy and Royal Naval Reserve.  With 8,500 members living all over the world, the Association still provides a link for all ex-wrens

The women's army
The war changed home and family life forever. Judith Orr explains how the needs of war production drew millions of women into work outside the home, and the impact this had on their role as wives and mothers

PATRONAGES, ACTIVITIES AND INTERESTS
During the Second World War, The Duchess of Gloucester played an important part in supporting the war effort, working alongside her husband and the King and Queen.

She took a great interest in the work of the various women's organisations and of the Red Cross and of the Order of St John. She was already a fully trained member of the Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) and a former Assistant Commandant of her local division in Scotland. From 1937 she was Deputy to Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother as Commandant-in-Chief of the Nursing Corps and Divisions of the St John Ambulance Brigade.

ATS Remembered
The A.T.S. was the forerunner of the British Women's Royal Army Corps. The aim of this site is to provide historical background for those that are interested, and to try and make contact with former members for research purposes. Please use the table below to find the items that are of interest to you.

Bletchley Park
During World War II the German armed forces top secret codes were broken at Bletchley Park, providing the allies with vital information towards their war effort. Situated 50 miles North-West of London, the site played host to a diverse group of code breakers, including Alan Turing and Dilly Knox. Among the ciphers that were broken were Enigma and Lorenz.

A Summer of 44
How We Began Collecting We began collecting ATS items about six years ago. The ATS seemed to be a forgotten part of our military history and that inspired us to collect ATS items. Our first item was a early pattern Battledress blouse issued to a Subaltern attached to the Royal Corps of Signals.

Miss Temples Army
Miss Beatrice Temple volunteered for excitement and adventure in the Auxiliary Territorial Service in the second World War. "I would volunteer for any organisation which wouldn't tell me beforehand what it was all about," said Miss Temple, talking of her wartime service.
